Drug Interactions With Quinine

When antacids, blood pressure medications, and certain statin medicines are taken with quinine, drug interactions may occur. These reactions can alter the level of the medications in your blood and increase your risk of potentially dangerous side effects. To help reduce your risk for complications, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications before starting treatment with quinine.

An Overview of Quinine Interactions

Quinine sulfate (Qualaquin®) is a prescription medication licensed to treat uncomplicated (or mild) malaria. This medication may potentially interact with many other medications, far too many to include in this article.
 
This article includes some of the more dangerous or common interactions. Some of the medications that may lead to quinine drug interactions include but are not limited to:
 
 
 
  • Codeine
  • Class I and Class III arrhythmia medications, such as:
     
    • Amiodarone (Cordarone®, Pacerone®)
    • Disopyramide (Norpace®, Norpace® CR)
    • Flecainide (Tambocor™)
    • Mexiletine
    • Phenytoin (Phenytek®, Dilantin®)
    • Procainamide
    • Propafenone (Rythmol®, Rythmol® SR)
    • Quinidine
    • Sotalol (Betapace®, Betapace AF®, Sorine®)
 
 
 
  • Dapsone
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin®)
  • Neuromuscular-blocking medications, such as:
     
    • Atracurium
    • Cisatracurium (Nimbex®)
    • Pancuronium
    • Rocuronium (Zemuron®)
    • Succinylcholine (Anectine®, Quelicin®)
    • Vecuronium (Norcuron®)
