Drug Interactions With Quinine

More Details on Drug Interactions With Quinine

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when quinine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Antacids
Taking antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium with quinine may decrease the amount of quinine your body absorbs, decreasing its effectiveness. You should avoid taking aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids during quinine treatment. If you need an antacid, your healthcare provider or pharmacist can help you choose one that does not contain aluminum or magnesium.

Blood Pressure Medications
Taking quinine in combination with a high blood pressure medication may cause your blood pressure to become too low. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your blood pressure more closely if you take these medications together.

Antimalarials
Taking quinine with certain other antimalarial medications increases the risk of QT prolongation, a dangerous type of arrhythmia. It should be noted that a combination of antimalarial medications are sometimes used to treat malaria. However, these medications should be used together only under the careful supervision of a healthcare provider.

Statin Medications
Quinine may increase the level of certain statin medications in the blood, increasing the risk for side effects. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Codeine
The body converts codeine into morphine, a strong pain reliever, using certain liver enzymes called CYP 2D6 enzymes. Codeine itself does not provide pain relief. Quinine decreases the activity of the CYP 2D6 enzymes, decreasing the amount of codeine that is changed to morphine. If you take codeine with quinine, you may notice that codeine does not work as well to relieve your pain. You may need a different pain medication during quinine treatment.
