Malarone Uses

Can Children Use It?

Malarone is approved to treat malaria in children who weigh 5 kg (11 pounds) or more. It can be used for malaria prevention in children who weigh 11 kg (about 24 pounds) or more. It has not been adequately studied in children under 11 pounds.

Can Older Adults Use Malarone?

It is unknown whether older adults respond to Malarone differently than other age groups. However, because older adults may be taking other medications, and may be more likely to have other medical problems (such as kidney disease), Malarone should be used with caution in older adults.

Off-Label Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than malaria. This would be known as an "off-label" use. For example, taking Malarone to treat malaria caused by a Plasmodium species other than Plasmodium falciparum is an example of a possible off-label Malarone use.
