Malarone
® (
atovaquone/proguanil) is a medication licensed for the treatment of
malaria -- in particular, uncomplicated cases that are caused by a specific type of parasite. It can also be used in combination with certain measures (such as avoiding
mosquitoes by using bed nets) to prevent malaria. It comes in tablet form and is usually taken once a day.
Among the conditions you should let your healthcare provider know about before you take this malaria drug are kidney disease, liver disease, and any
allergies. Malarone, like any medicine, has the potential to cause side effects; however, most people tolerate it well. In clinical studies, the most commonly reported reactions included
headache, stomach pain, and nausea.
