Malarone Drug Interactions

Phenothiazine Medications
Malarone may increase phenothiazine levels in the body, increasing the risk for side effects. Although this interaction has only been reported in people taking other antimalarial medications, because of the similarities between Malarone and these other medications, it may be a good idea to watch for side effects, such as extreme sedation, if you take a phenothiazine with Malarone.

Rifamycin Derivatives
Rifamycin derivatives may reduce the amount of Malarone in your body, potentially making it less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Ritonavir
Ritonavir may reduce the amount of Malarone in your body, potentially making it less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Tetracycline
Tetracycline may decrease the amount of Malarone in your body, potentially making it less effective. If you take these medications together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely to make sure Malarone is working for you.

Warfarin
Combining warfarin with Malarone may increase your risk for bleeding. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely if you take these medications together. Your warfarin dosage may need to be adjusted either when you start or stop taking Malarone.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not all Malarone drug interactions were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any specific interactions that may apply to you. It is always a good idea to give your healthcare provider a complete list of all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbs and supplements.
