If you have
malaria or are traveling to an area where malaria is a risk, a healthcare provider may recommend Malarone
® (
atovaquone/proguanil). This medication comes in tablet form and is available by prescription only. To prevent malaria, the medicine is usually started one or two days before arriving in a malaria area, during the stay, and for seven days after returning. When used to treat malaria, it is usually taken for three days.
Not everyone can use this malaria medication, so review the safety information for Malarone with your healthcare provider before starting treatment. Also, tell your healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, or any
allergies. Most people tolerate this product well, but side effects are possible. In clinical trials, the most common reactions included nausea,
headache, appetite loss, and
diarrhea.
