Using Chloroquine to Prevent Malaria
If you will be traveling to an area where the risk for malaria
is high, prevention strategies are recommended. Most involve trying to keep mosquitoes
from biting you, especially at night, when they are most active. Some of these malaria prevention strategies include:
- Wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing if you are outdoors at night
- Sleeping under bed nets, which are especially effective if they have been treated with insecticide
- Taking antimalarial medications before, during, and after your trip.
is one of several medications used to help prevent malaria. Not all medications work equally well in all malaria areas, though. For example, many parts of Africa, Asia, and South America are known to have malaria that is resistant to chloroquine.
The medication you take for malaria prevention will depend on the area you will be visiting. Therefore, it is a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider about your travel plans.
Using Chloroquine to Treat Extraintestinal Amebiasis
Amebiasis is an infection caused by a parasite called Entamoeba histolytica
. Although the infection is rare in the United States, it is relatively common in developing countries -- up to 50 million people get an amebiasis infection each year. Most people get the disease from contaminated food or water. It may also be passed from person to person.
An amebiasis infection in the intestines can cause intestinal inflammation. When the infection occurs outside of the intestines, it is called extraintestinal amebiasis. The most common location for extraintestinal amebiasis is the liver; however, an infection can also occur in the lungs and, in rare cases, the heart or brain.
Symptoms of extraintestinal amebiasis will depend on where the infection has occurred. For example, symptoms of an infection in the lungs will include chest pain, cough, and shortness of breath. More commonly, an infection will occur in the liver. In these cases, symptoms include the following:
- Pain in the upper-right abdomen (stomach)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weight loss.
Chloroquine is one of several medications used to treat extraintestinal amebiasis. It is normally used in combination with a medication that will treat an amebiasis infection in the intestines.
