Lariam Uses

Using Lariam to Prevent Malaria

If you will be traveling to an area where the risk for malaria is high, malaria prevention strategies are recommended. Some of these strategies include:
  • Keeping mosquitoes from biting you, especially at night
  • Wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing if you are outdoors at night
  • Sleeping under bed nets, which are especially effective if they have been treated with insecticide
  • Taking antimalaria medications before, during, and after your trip.
Lariam is one of several medications approved for malaria prevention. Not all medications work equally well in all malaria areas. The medication you take to prevent malaria will depend on the area you will visit. Therefore, it is a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider about your travel plans.

How Does Lariam Work?

Lariam treats malaria by killing the Plasmodium parasite. The exact manner in which Lariam kills these parasites is unknown.

Can Children Use It?

Lariam is approved for use in children as young as six months of age. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than six months old.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Lariam should be used with caution in older adults. Older adults may be more likely to have heart disease, and may therefore be more sensitive to the heart-related side effects of Lariam.

Off-Label Uses for Lariam

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Lariam for something other than malaria treatment or prevention. This would be known as an "off-label" use. At this time there are no universally accepted off-label uses of Lariam.
