Coartem Uses

How Does It Work?

Coartem treats malaria by killing the Plasmodium parasite. Although it is not entirely known how it does this, it is thought that the medication prevents Plasmodium from using blood glucose for energy and from making proteins and nucleic acid, which are essential for the parasite to live.

Can Children Use Coartem?

Coartem is approved for children who weigh at least 11 pounds (5 kg). It has not been adequately studied in children who weigh less than 11 pounds.

Can Older Adults Use It?

It is unknown whether older adults respond differently to Coartem than other age groups. However, because older adults may be taking additional medicines and may be more likely to have other medical problems, such as kidney or liver disease, Coartem should be used with caution in older adults.

Off-Label Uses for Coartem

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Coartem for something other than malaria treatment. This would be known as an "off-label" use. Using Coartem to treat malaria caused by the parasite P. vivax is an example of an off-label use.
