Available by prescription only, Coartem
® (
artemether/lumefantrine) is a medicine used to treat
malaria. Specifically, this medication is used to treat mild cases of malaria, also called uncomplicated malaria. Coartem is used for
malaria treatment; it is not effective at preventing the malaria blood infection from occurring.
As an antimalarial medication, Coartem works by killing the parasites that cause this blood infection. It is believed that Coartem prevents the bacteria from using blood glucose for energy and from making proteins and nucleic acid, which are essential for the parasites to live.
